Ingredients for Maharashtrian Khirapat Recipe: Make This Traditional Ganesh Chaturthi Prasad At Home Recipe

  • 0.17 cup Dry grated coconut
  • As required ½ cup powdered sugar
  • As required ¼ cup roasted gram dal (dalia)
  • As required ¼ cup roasted peanuts
  • 0.33 tbsp poppy seeds
  • 0.33 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 0.33 tbsp Cashews
  • 0.33 tbsp almonds
  • 0.17 tbsp Raisins
  • As required ½ tsp cardamom powder
  • As required ¼ tsp Nutmeg powder
  • 0.83 nos – saffron strands
  • As required Optional
  • 0.17 tbsp Ghee

Directions: Maharashtrian Khirapat Recipe: Make This Traditional Ganesh Chaturthi Prasad At Home

  • STEP 1.Place a heavy-bottomed pan over low heat and pour in your dry grated coconut. Roast gently for 3–4 minutes, stirring constantly, until it has turned fragrant and lightly golden. Do not let it become dark, as burnt coconut can make the khirapat bitter.
  • STEP 2.Then transfer the roasted coconut to a plate and allow it to cool completely.
  • STEP 3.In the same pan, dry-roast your poppy seeds and sesame seeds separately for about 1–2 minutes each. They should become aromatic without changing much colour.
  • STEP 4.Time to add in your cashews and almonds and roast for another 2 minutes. If you are using raw peanuts, then roast them separately until crisp, before rubbing away the skins once they have cooled down.
  • STEP 5.Now add your roasted gram dal to a mixer along with the toasted peanuts, cashews and almonds. Pulse a few times to create a coarse mixture. Do not grind it into a fine powder, as a little texture gives your khirapat its characteristic bite.
  • STEP 6.Now pour in your cooled roasted coconut, poppy seeds, and sesame seeds into the mixer. Pulse briefly once or twice, while remembering and ensuring that the mixture remains slightly coarse.
  • STEP 7.Transfer everything to a large bowl. Incorporate your powdered sugar, cardamom powder, and nutmeg powder.
  • STEP 8.Also add in your raisins and saffron strands, if using. Mix thoroughly until the sugar is evenly distributed throughout the roasted mixture.
  • STEP 9.Finally, warm your ghee until it has just melted and drizzle it generously over the mixture. Toss gently with a spoon or clean hands until everything is well combined.
  • STEP 10.Taste and adjust the sweetness if required, according to personal preferences. The finished khirapat should be fragrant, lightly crumbly, and nutty, with the coconut and roasted seeds providing plenty of texture and satisfaction.
  • STEP 11.Allow it to cool completely before serving or storing the mix. For Ganesh Chaturthi purposes, serve the khirapat in small bowls as naivedya or prasad alongside the festive offerings.
