Kuzhalappam is a tasty and simple snack recipe with a fine mixture of rice powder and onions. It is a traditional healthy tube-shaped snack popular among Kerala Christians. It is a favourite snack with tea or coffee and is often sent to people abroad. The snack is made with ground shallot, coconut milk, shredded coconut, sesame and cumin seeds. It might seem a bit long procedure, but it's not at all hard to prepare. Once the snack is deeply fried, let it rest on tissue paper and extract the excess oil from kuzhalappam. For oil extraction, kitchen tissue paper will do an excellent job.

Ingredients for Kuzhalappam Recipe

  • 0.38 No.s Garlic
  • 1/2 No.s Shallots
  • 1/4 tablespoon Grated coconut
  • 0.13 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 0.19 cup Water
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.13 tablespoon Oil
  • 0.13 cup Rice flour
  • 0.13 teaspoon Black Sesame Seeds

Steps to prepare

  • STEP 1.Warm oil on moderate heat in a pot and fry the prepared Kuzhalappam till crispy.
  • STEP 2.To fry them evenly, stir in between.
  • STEP 3.Once brittle, take them out and drain the extra oil on a paper towel.

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Grind 2 garlic cloves, 4 shallots, 2 tbsp grated coconut and 1 tsp cumin seeds in a mixer grinder. Keep it aside.
  • STEP 2.Boil in a pan add 1 ½ cup of water, 1 tbsp oil and 2 tsp salt. When the water begins to boil, add 1 cup of rice flour.
  • STEP 3.Turn off the flame and mix the ingredients with a spoon.
  • STEP 4.Add the ground mix and stir well.
  • STEP 5.Keep closed in a vessel for 15 minutes.
  • STEP 6.Knead to form a dough.
  • STEP 7.Take balls from the dough and flatten using a rolling pin.
  • STEP 8.Make each flattened dough in a wrapped cylinder shape.
  • STEP 9.Fry in a cooking pan on medium-low flame till light gold shade.

Storage and serving method

  • STEP 1.Store for more than a week in an airtight container and serve kuzhalappam at room temperature.
