A delicious fascinating dish prepared from pai tee cups filled with yam beans, cucumber, chillies and scallions. Pie Tee is a thin and crispy pastry tart shell kuih often filled with a spicy, shredded Chinese turnips, sweet mixture of thinly sliced vegetables and prawns. It is a popular Peranakan dish. Kuih Pie Tee is made up of crispy thin pastry cups filled with sautéd jicama, omelet and fresh cucumber strips. Also known as top hat because of its shape, it is one of the many popular Peranakan appetizers. It is crispy, savoury and tastes amazing with chilli sauce.

  • 400 gram yam bean
  • 1/2 tablespoon Oil
  • 2 Nos garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon fermented soybean sauce
  • 50 gram prawns
  • 1 Nos tofu
  • 1.25 teaspoon salt
  • 600 milliliter Water
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 1.50 tablespoon Soy Sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon Sugar
  • 20 gram wheat flour
  • 60 gram rice flour
  • 25 gram corn flour
  • 2 Nos eggs
  • 1 Nos scallion
  • 1/4 Nos cucumber
  • As required Chilli peppers
  • As required Chilli sauce

How to Make Kuih Pai Tee Recipe

step 1

STEP 01

Peel off the yam bean and slice it into thin strips.

Soak yam beans for at least 4 hours in water and then rinse. Mince the garlic.

To make the cups add wheat flour, rice flour, corn flour, salt in a bowl add eggs, water as well to make a smooth batter.

Add oil in a pan. Add the minced garlic & fermented bean paste and saute it.

Then add prawns followed by yam bean and tofu strips.

Add salt as per taste and add water enough to cover the ingredients , then add soy sauce, dark soy sauce and sugar.

Also add egg and water and mix well then strain the batter through and keep it aside for 30 mins.

Now dip the pie tee mould into the hot oil and then into the batter.

Now fry it until it turns golden brown and repeat the procedure until done.

Now take the pie tee cups and fill it with fried yam beans, cucumber slices, chillies, scallions and omelettes.
