Kovakka Thoran is a simple side dish where Ivy gourd is sauteed along with coconut and basic spices. You can make this as a side dish with your South Indian meals. The Kovakka Thoran (Poriyal) Recipe is an inspiration of the Kerala dish. You can also add onions to this dish and lots more green chillies. This recipe is without the onions and you can server it either ways.

Ingredients for Kovakka Thoran Recipe

  • 250 gram Ivy gourd finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup Grated coconut
  • 5 No.s Green chilly
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin powder
  • 2 Garlic Cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon Coconut oil
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • As required Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds

Directions: Kovakka Thoran Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.Into a mixer jar take in ½ cup grated coconut,5 green chilly, ½ tsp cumin powder, 2 garlic cloves and ½ tsp turmeric powder.

  • STEP 1.Grind the ingredients and keep aside for further cooking.

  • STEP 1.Set a pan on the stove on medium flame.

  • STEP 1.Once hot add in ½ tsp mustard seeds and wait for mustard seeds to splutter.

  • STEP 1.Add curry leaves to the pan and saute for a minute.

  • STEP 1.Add in the ground coconut mix and a pinch of salt. Saute it for 2-3 minutes.

  • STEP 1.Finally bring in the main ingredient, finely chopped ivy gourd.

step 8

  • STEP 1.Stir well and bring the ingredients to the centre of the pan.

  • STEP 1.Cook on a medium flame for 10 minutes with a lid.

step 10

  • STEP 1.Uncover and cook for another 1 minute till completely dry. Turn off the flame and serve.
