Directions: Koeksisters Recipe

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Add butter and rub it into the flour mixture until it resembles breadcrumbs.
  • STEP 2.In a separate bowl, whisk together milk and egg. Gradually add the milk mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  • STEP 3.Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  • STEP 4.Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 5mm. Cut the dough into strips and then into smaller strips, about 10cm long and 1cm wide.
  • STEP 5.Take one strip and twist it into a braid, then pinch the ends together to seal. Repeat with the remaining strips.
  • STEP 6.Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 180°C (350°F). Fry the koeksisters in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • STEP 7.Remove the koeksisters from the oil and drain on paper towels. While still hot, dip them into the cold syrup, coating them thoroughly.
  • STEP 8.Allow the koeksisters to cool and soak in the syrup for at least 2 hours before serving. Serve at room temperature as a sweet treat or dessert.

Cooking Tips

  • Make sure the dough is well-rested to achieve a light and fluffy texture.
  • Twist the dough strips tightly to create a defined braid pattern.
  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature to achieve a crispy exterior and fully cooked interior.
  • Allow the koeksisters to cool completely before storing to maintain their texture and freshness.

  • Serve the koeksisters as a sweet treat or dessert, either on their own or with a scoop of ice cream.
