Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Wash and cook the toor dal in a pressure cooker until soft and mushy.
  • STEP 2.In a separate pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add curry leaves and dried red chilies.
  • STEP 3.Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. Then, add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
  • STEP 4.Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
  • STEP 5.Add the cooked dal to the tomato mixture and mix well. Simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
  • STEP 6.In a small pan, heat ghee and fry the sliced shallots until golden brown. Add this tempering to the dal and mix well.
  • STEP 7.Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.

  • Toor dal can also be cooked in a regular pot, but it may take longer.
