A delicious North Indian preparation of pumpkin (kaddu) and Simla mirch (capsicum). Kaddu Simla Mirch Sabzi is a simple sabzi where Pumpkin and Capsicum are simmered in a simple masala along with jaggery giving it a sweet and spicy taste. Serve it along with Gujarati Kadhi, Phulka and Satvik Carrot Sprouts Salad for a weekday meal.

Ingredients for Kaddu Simla Mirch Sabji Recipe

  • 500 gram Pumpkin cubed
  • 1 No.s Capsicum diced
  • 1 No.s Onion Diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Fenugreek seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • 2 No.s Tomatoes finely chopped
  • 2 sprig Curry leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Sambar powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Jaggery

step 1

  • STEP 1.Cut the skin off the pumpkin and cube it.

  • STEP 1.Heat a pan and add 1 tsp mustard oil or any refined oil.add ½ tsp mustard seeds, ½ tsp cumin seeds and ¼ tsp fenugreek seeds. Give it a stir and allow them to splutter.

  • STEP 1.Then add 1 diced onion and 1 diced capsicum and saute on medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes till onions are translucent and capsicum is a little soft. They will continue to cook after other ingredients have been added, hence do not cook them completely at this stage.

  • STEP 1.Then add 500 gms of pumpkin or kaddu, 2 finely chopped tomatoes, 2 sprigs of curry leaf roughly torn to release great flavour, ½ tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp sambar powder, or panch phoran, 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp jaggery. Stir to combine well.

  • STEP 1.Turn the heat to medium low and cover the pan. Allow the kaddu and simla mirch to cook completely, stirring intermittently. After 5 to 7 minutes the vegetables should be cooked. Turn off the heat.
