  • 1/4 cup Lentils
  • 1/2 tablespoon Oil
  • 1/4 Onion, Thinly Sliced
  • 1/4 tablespoon Grated Ginger
  • 1 cloves Cloves Of Garlic, Minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 0.13 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 0.13 teaspoon Garam Masala

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Rinse the basmati rice and lentils separately under cold water until the water runs clear.
  • STEP 2.In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add the rice. Cook until the rice is 70% cooked, then drain and set aside.
  • STEP 3.In another pot, cook the lentils until they are tender, then drain and set aside.
  • STEP 4.In a large skillet, heat oil and add the onions, ginger, garlic, and spices. Cook until the onions are golden brown.
  • STEP 5.Add the cooked lentils to the skillet and mix well with the spices.
  • STEP 6.In a large pot, layer the partially cooked rice and lentil mixture, starting and ending with rice.
  • STEP 7.Cover the pot and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes until the rice is fully cooked and the flavors have melded together.
  • STEP 8.Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.

Storage and Serving

  • Leftover dal biryani can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To reheat, place the biryani in a microwave-safe dish and heat in the microwave until heated through.
  • Serve the dal biryani with raita (yogurt sauce) and papadums for a complete Indian meal.
