  • STEP 1.In a large bowl, mix together rye flour, whole wheat flour, sugar, and baking powder.
  • STEP 2.Gradually add buttermilk to the dry ingredients and mix until a sticky dough forms.
  • STEP 3.Transfer the dough to a greased pot or casserole dish and cover tightly with aluminum foil.
  • STEP 4.Dig a hole in the ground, about 2 feet deep, and place the pot in the hole.
  • STEP 5.Cover the pot with soil, making sure it is completely sealed.
  • STEP 6.Leave the bread to cook underground for 24 hours.
  • STEP 7.After 24 hours, carefully remove the pot from the ground and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • STEP 8.Remove the bread from the pot and slice it into thick slices.
