A Himachali style chickpeas recipe with full of spices This is one of the most popular dishes from the northern state of Himachal Pradesh where it is very commonly prepared in every household and is eaten with plain steamed rice.‘Khatta’ in Hindi means sour. As the name suggests, this dish has a sour taste where the dominant flavor comes from the addition of imli (tamarind). Amchur (dry mango powder) can also be used as a substitute instead.

Ingredients for Himachali Khatta Recipe

  • 2 pinch hing
  • 1-2 Cloves
  • 4 Black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 red chili
  • 1 ts fennel seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1-2 bay leaves
  • 2 cup Chickpeas
  • 1 cup chopped onion and garlic
  • 2 teaspoon Sugar
  • 2 tablespoon dry mango powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala

  • STEP 1.Soak the chickpeas overnight

  • STEP 2.Chop the onions and garlic

step 3

  • STEP 3.Cook the chickpeas with 1tsp turmeric powder, salt and 1 cup of water in a pressure cooker for 20 to 25 mins

  • STEP 4.In a cooking pan, heat 2 tbsp oil

step 5

  • STEP 5.Add 2 red chili, 2 pinch,cloves,black pepper,bay leaves and jeera

  • STEP 6.Add 1 cup of chopped onion and garlic , fry well

step 7

  • STEP 7.Add coriander powder,garam masala and fennel seeds

step 8

  • STEP 8.Add dry mango powder and turmeric powder then mix well

step 9

  • STEP 9.Add boiled chickpeas and cook for 2 mins

step 10

  • STEP 10.Add 1tbsp sugar and fry for 5mins

step 11

  • STEP 11.Add 1 cup of water and sim for 10mins

step 12

  • STEP 12.Serve with rice or roti
