Plait bread is a type of braided bread (plait, meaning to braid or interweave) and is the most popular bread in Guyanese cuisine. It can be eaten for breakfast with various spreads, dipped in tea, toasted with butter, and completes a wonderful pepperpot meal on Christmas morning. Guyanese plait bread is white bread that isn’t too light or too dense. It’s sturdy enough to dipping in warm stews such as Pepperpot.

Ingredients for Guyanese Plait Bread Recipe

  • 1 tablespoon dry active yeast
  • 1.25 cup Warm Water
  • 1/4 cup Brown Sugar
  • 3.25 cup All purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 cup room tee butter or use vegan butter
  • 1 tablespoon Vegan butter for basting after baking

step 1

  • STEP 1.Dissolve you brown sugar into slightly warm water and add in yeast and mix well. In a bowl take flour and mix it with butter to make a crumbly dough. Make a well in the center of the bowl and pour in your yeast mixture. Mix it well and knead it into a dough.

step 2

  • STEP 1.Grease a bowl with some butter and place the prepared dough in it. Cover the bowl with a cotton cloth and set it aside for 30 minutes at a warm place so that the dough can rise. Take the dough and knead it good. Divide the dough into 3 equal pieces and roll into a 1 & 1 1/2 feet long cylinder. Braid the pieces together.

  • STEP 1.Grease a sheet pan with some butter and place you dough braid on it. Cover with a cotton cloth and set it aside to rise a bit for 20 minutes. bake the bread in the oven for 25 minutes at 300 degrees F. Brush it with some butter and it is ready.
