This mithai is a soft, fried fitter is a popular treat at Guyanese and Trinidadian special occasions such as weddings. These soft mithai is made with flour, butter, fresh coconut, anise seed, and evaporated milk. It's fried till golden brown then tossed in a sugar syrup until crystallized. She only made these on Hindu holidays such as Diwali and Holi, and other religious functions. These sweets were just one among many that we enjoyed during auspicious times of year. We also made peera, a crunchy mithai/kurma, and parsad.

Ingredients for Guyanese Mithai Recipe

  • 4 cup All purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1.50 piece sticks butter
  • 0.33 cup custard powder
  • 2 tablespoon milk powder
  • 1 cup freshly grated coconut
  • 2 teaspoon ground anise seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Ginger
  • 2 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 1.50 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 2 tablespoon condensed milk
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • As required extra evaporated milk

Directions: Guyanese Mithai Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.In a bowl take all purpose flour and add baking powder, cinnamon powder, nutmeg powder, ground aniseeds, ground ginger, ground cardamom milk powder and custard powder.

  • STEP 1.Mix everything and add in some butter and freshly grated coconut. Pour in the condensed milk and coconut milk. Mix everything together and make firm dough. Roll up your dough in a way so that its 3/4 inch thick. Cut into small triangles.

  • STEP 1.Heat some oil in a pan and deep fry your mithai in it for 3-4 minutes. Add in sugar and water to the pot and cook it for about 15 minutes. Add cardamom powder and mix well. Turn off the flame and pour the sugar syrup on top of the mithai. Toss it well so that all the pieces are coated properly.
