Directions: Grilled Tofu Gyros Recipe

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Start by marinating the tofu in a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, and salt and pepper. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to develop.
  • STEP 2.Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Remove the tofu from the marinade and grill for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until it is nicely charred and heated through.
  • STEP 3.While the tofu is grilling, prepare the tzatziki sauce by combining Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, dill, and salt and pepper in a bowl. Mix well and refrigerate until ready to use.
  • STEP 4.Once the tofu is done, remove it from the grill and let it cool slightly. Slice it into thin strips.
  • STEP 5.To assemble the gyros, warm the pita bread in a toaster or on the grill. Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce on each pita bread, then top with the grilled tofu, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, and fresh herbs like parsley or mint.
  • STEP 6.Fold the pita bread in half and serve the Grilled Tofu Gyros immediately. Enjoy!

Cooking Tips

  • Press the tofu before marinating to remove excess moisture and improve texture.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like lettuce or bell peppers to the gyros for extra crunch and flavor.
  • If you don't have a grill, you can also cook the tofu in a skillet or bake it in the oven.
  • Serve the gyros with a side of Greek salad or roasted potatoes for a complete meal.

Storage and Serving

  • Leftover grilled tofu can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To reheat the tofu, simply warm it in a skillet or microwave until heated through.
  • When serving leftovers, you can refresh the pita bread by toasting it lightly before assembling the gyros again.
