Ingredients for Goan Dal-Toi Recipe

  • 1/4 cup Toor Dal
  • 3/4 cup Water
  • 0.13 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • As required Salt To Taste
  • 1/2 tablespoon Oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1.13 Lic Cloves, Minced
  • 2.25 Y Leaves
  • 1/4 Onion, Finely Chopped
  • 1/2 Tomatoes, Finely Chopped
  • as per your need Chopped Coriander Leaves For Garnish

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Rinse the toor dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  • STEP 2.In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 4-5 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy.
  • STEP 3.In a separate pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they start spluttering, add cumin seeds, garlic, and curry leaves. Saute until the garlic turns golden brown.
  • STEP 4.Add chopped onions and saute until they turn translucent.
  • STEP 5.Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and mushy.
  • STEP 6.Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.
  • STEP 7.Bring the dal to a boil and simmer for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
  • STEP 8.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or bread.

Cooking Tips

  • Soaking the dal helps in reducing the cooking time and ensures even cooking.
  • You can adjust the spice level by adding more or less red chili powder.
  • For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of ghee while tempering the spices.

Storage and Serving

  • Leftover dal can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat the dal on the stovetop or in the microwave before serving.
  • Serve the Goan Dal-Toi with steamed rice, jeera rice, or any Indian bread like roti or naan.
