Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.In a mixing bowl, combine gram flour, red chili powder, turmeric powder, carom seeds, salt, and oil. Knead into a firm dough.
  • STEP 2.Divide the dough into small portions and shape them into cylindrical dumplings.
  • STEP 3.Boil water in a pan and add the dumplings. Cook until they float to the surface. Remove and keep aside.
  • STEP 4.In a separate pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add asafoetida, ginger-garlic paste, and chopped onions. Saute until onions turn golden brown.
  • STEP 5.Add tomato puree, red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the masala.
  • STEP 6.Whisk yogurt and add it to the masala. Stir well and cook for a few minutes.
  • STEP 7.Add water and bring the gravy to a boil. Add the cooked dumplings and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  • STEP 8.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with roti or rice.

Cooking Tips

  • Make sure to knead the dough for the dumplings well to achieve a smooth texture.
  • To check if the dumplings are cooked, insert a toothpick or knife into one. If it comes out clean, they are done.
  • Adjust the spice levels according to your preference by adding more or less red chili powder.
  • For a richer gravy, you can add a tablespoon of cream or cashew paste.

Storage and Serving

  • Gatte Ki Sabji can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat the sabji in a pan or microwave before serving.
  • Serve hot with roti, paratha, or rice for a complete meal.
