A very unique dish prepared from pilau masala,beef and rice. East African Pilau is a traditional, beautiful fragrant rice dish made with many aromatic spices that adds an amazing depth of flavor to the rice. It can be made with either beef or chicken. Pilau has a wonderful balance of flavors. It is a festive dish, which is never missing during special occasions or events. It’s made with rice cooked in a well-seasoned broth of Meat or chicken. Unlike the Indian pilau, the East African version does not use curry and it’s less spicy.

Ingredients for East African Pilau Recipe

  • 1 teaspoon Cloves
  • 2 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1 stick Nos cinnamon
  • 1/2 tablespoon black peppercorns
  • 12 Nos cardamom
  • As required Ingredients for Rice Pilau
  • 2 cup basmati rice
  • 5 Nos potatoes
  • 1/4 cup Olive oil/vegetable oil
  • 2 Nos red onions
  • 4 Nos garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoon Ginger
  • 1 Nos serrano chile
  • 1 tablespoon pilau masala
  • 2 Nos beef stock cubes
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro
  • 1 pound beef sirloin cubed
  • 3 Nos roma tomatoes
  • 4 cup Water
  • 2 Nos bay leaves
  • As required Salt

Directions: East African Pilau Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.Peel off the potatoes, wash them and cut into quarters. Mince garlic and ginger. Thinly slice the red onions. Finely chop serrano chilli. Roughly chop fresh cilantro. Wash the rice and drain water. Dry roast cloves, Cumin seeds, black peppercorns, cardamom, cinnamon sticks and fry it for a few minutes until aromatic.

  • STEP 1.Now grind the roasted ingredients to make a powder. In a cooking pot add oil and heat it. Add sliced onions and saute them until brown. Now add serrano chile, minced garlic and ginger and fry it for a minute. Add beef pieces along with the ground masala, seasoning powder, bay leaves, cilantro and salt.

  • STEP 1.Mix well to cover and cook for 7-8 mins. Add tomatoes, cover and cook it for 4-5 minutes. Then add potatoes, water and now cover and cook for another 10 minutes. Lastly add rice, mix well and cover the pan with a foil. Cook the rice for 20 minutes and then serve.
