  • 1/2 cup Chana Dal
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • pinch A Pinch Of Asafoetida
  • 1 Green Chilies, Chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • As required Salt To Taste
  • 1 cup Wheat Flour

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Wash and soak the chana dal in water for 2-3 hours.
  • STEP 2.Drain the soaked dal and grind it to a coarse paste without adding water.
  • STEP 3.In a pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds, asafoetida, and chopped green chilies. Saute for a minute.
  • STEP 4.Add the ground dal paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring continuously.
  • STEP 5.Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.
  • STEP 6.In a separate bowl, mix the wheat flour, salt, and water to make a soft dough.
  • STEP 7.Divide the dough into small balls and roll each ball into a small circle.
  • STEP 8.Place a spoonful of the dal mixture in the center of each circle and fold it in half to form a semi-circle. Press the edges to seal.
  • STEP 9.Steam the dal fara in a steamer for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked.
  • STEP 10.Serve hot with chutney or yogurt.

Cooking Tips

  • You can add chopped onions, ginger, or garlic to the lentil filling for added flavor.
  • If you prefer a crispy texture, you can deep fry the dal fara instead of steaming it.
  • To make the dough more flavorful, you can add a pinch of ajwain (carom seeds) or kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves).

Storage and Serving

  • Dal fara can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
