One of the traditional and popular fish curry, Dahi Maach or Doi Maach is an easy-to-make recipe that is typically prepared with rohu fish cooked in a spicy curd gravy. A perfect mix of sweet and spicy, this dish will take your taste buds on a flavourful ride like never before. The recipe uses a melange of aromatic spices that gives the dish the authentic Bengali taste.

Ingredients for Dahi Machha/Doi Maach Recipe

  • 4 No.s Fish slices
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 teaspoon Oil For Frying
  • 2 teaspoon Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 No.s Onion Sliced
  • 6 No.s Green chillies
  • 2 teaspoon Garlic paste
  • As required Salt
  • 2 teaspoon Kashmiri red chilli powder
  • 2 teaspoon Ground mustard paste
  • 3 teaspoon Curd
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin paste for flavour
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard oil for flavour
  • A Handful coriander leaves/chopped

Directions: Dahi Machha/doi Maach Recipe

  • STEP 1.Place 4 slices of fish in a bowl and add ½ tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp salt and rub it well in the fish. Leave it to marinate for 10 minutes.
  • STEP 2.Preheat a pan and add 2 tsp oil. Place the fish in the hot pan and fry on low heat till the fish are light golden brown on both sides. Remove and keep aside.
  • STEP 3.Add 2 tsp oil in the pan and add ½ tsp black cumin seeds (nigella), ½ tsp mustard seeds and allow the seeds to splutter.
  • STEP 4.Then add 1 sliced onion and fry till onion is golden.
  • STEP 5.Add slit green chillies as per taste (odia cuisine uses a lot of chillies). Stir together.
  • STEP 6.Add 2 tsp garlic paste and mix well with the onions for a few seconds.
  • STEP 7.Next add ½ tsp turmeric powder, salt to taste and 2 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder for colour.stir well.
  • STEP 8.Add 2 tsp ground mustard paste. Do not fry for long after adding the mustard.
  • STEP 9.In a small bowl add 3 tsp curd and whisk well. Add a little water to make a buttermilk-like mixture.
  • STEP 10.Pour this over the masala gravy in the pan and stir to combine.
  • STEP 11.Add the slices of fried fish to the pan. Cover and cook on a simmer for 5 to 7 minutes.
  • STEP 12.Lastly add 1 tsp cumin paste and 1 tsp mustard oil for flavour. Give it a stir.
  • STEP 13.Dahi machha (curd fish ) is ready to serve.
