Classic Rava Idli Recipe

A variation of the common idli, a non fermented idli made with rava (sooji/semolina) and carrots, flavoured with ginger. The idli is a steamed cake made with semolina, yogurt, spices, veggies and a leavening agent. These are eaten for breakfast as well as lunch. Making rava idli is quick as well as easy since it is an instant recipe which needs no fermentation or grinding.

Ingredients for Classic Rava Idli Recipe

  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 inch Ginger grated
  • 2 No.s Green chillies chopped
  • 1/4 cup Cashew nuts
  • 1 cup Sooji
  • 1 cup Curd
  • 1/2 cup Carrots grated
  • 1 No.s E fruit salt tsp
  • 1 teaspoon Salt

Directions: Classic Rava Idli Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.In a preheated pan add 1 tsp oil, 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 inch grated ginger, 2 chopped green chillies, ¼ cup cashew nuts and saute for a few seconds.

  • STEP 1.Next add 1 cup sooji (rava/semolina) and roast for a few minutes till there is no raw smell. Stir continuously to avoid rava from burning. Set aside to cool.

  • STEP 1.In a mixing bowl add the roasted rava, 1 cup curd (yogurt/ dahi), ½ cup grated carrots, 1 tsp enos fruit salt and 1 tsp salt. Stir to mix all the ingredients well. Set aside for about 5 minutes.

  • STEP 1.Grease the cavities of an idli mold/plate with oil. Spoon the rava mixture into each cavity.

step 5

  • STEP 1.Place it in a preheated steamer and steam on high for 10 minutes until idlis are cooked through.

step 6

  • STEP 1.Remove from the molds and serve hot with coconut chutney.
