Kerala style puttu is a trendy breakfast combination item and a favourite dish of Keralites. It is a traditional and filling breakfast paired with chicken ularthiyathu, kadala curry, beef ularthiyathu, fish pickle, pappad etc. In earlier days, puttu was created in cut pieces of coconut or bamboo shell. Do you own a vessel or puttu kutti? Then it is ideal for you to make this perfect breakfast. Don't have a puttu kutti? Fret not, and don't deter from preparing this great dish. Here is how you can cook puttu with coconut shells without trouble. Just use a pressure cooker for steaming and poke your eyes on the coconut shells. Then, slowly add water to the roasting and ground rice. Now cook it with layers of coconut while adding to the puttu kutti. Puttu is can also be served with ripe plantains, steamed bananas or honey drizzle. Besides rice flour, you can also use ragi flour, wheat flour, oats etc.

Ingredients for Chiratta Puttu Recipe

  • 1/2 cup Rice flour
  • 1.50 tablespoon Grated coconut
  • As required Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 2.50 tablespoon Water

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Mix in a bowl the ingredients for puttu, 1 cup rice flour, 2 tsp grated coconut, ½ tsp cumin seeds and a pinch of salt to taste.
  • STEP 2.Add water little by little and mix well the ingredients. Then, into the puttu maker, add 1 tsp of grated coconut to form the base layer.
  • STEP 3.Fill in the puttu mix into the puttu maker. With 2 tsp grated coconut form a top layer.
  • STEP 4.Close the puttu maker with the lid. Steam for 5 minutes, and the chiratta puttu is ready.
