A popular street food called Chinese flat bread or XiaoBing is shallow fried and has a juicy filling of seasoned ground beef and crispy skin. One of the most popular street foods in northern China is a flatbread, jian bing. Cooked to order, the vendor spreads a thin pancake batter in a perfect circle on a hot griddle. In a few seconds, after the batter has set, she cracks a raw egg onto it, breaks it up, and spreads it all over the pancake.

Ingredients for Chinese Flat Bread Recipe

  • As required Ingredients for the dough
  • 300 gram Plain flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 165 milliliter Warm water
  • As required Ingredients for filling
  • 250 gram Ground Beef
  • 1 tablespoon Soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese cooking wine
  • 2 teaspoon Sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon Five Spice Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Chicken powder
  • 1/4 cup Chopped coriander
  • 1/4 cup Chopped Onion
  • 1/4 cup Chopped spring onion
  • 2 teaspoon Ground ginger
  • As required Ingredients for glaze
  • 2 tablespoon Spring onion finely chopped
  • 1.50 tablespoon Flour
  • 2 teaspoon Sichuan Peppercorn Powder
  • 2 teaspoon White peppercorn powder
  • 0.33 cup Oil heated
  • As required Sesame seeds for coating
  • As required Oil For Shallow Frying

Directions: Chinese Flat Bread Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.1 for the dough, in a large mixing bowl add 300 gm plain flour and ½ tsp salt. Mix together. Then add 165 ml warm water gradually. Mix with chopsticks till the flour comes together. The knead by hand till it forms a dough.

step 2

  • STEP 2.2 cover the dough with plastic film and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  • STEP 3.3 to make the filling, in a mixing bowl add 250 gm ground beef, 1 tbsp soy sauce ,1 tbsp chinese cooking wine, 2 tsp sesame oil, 1 tsp five spice powder, 1 tsp chicken powder,¼ tsp salt. Mix together to combine well till the beef absorbs the liquid.

  • STEP 4.4 next add ¼ cup chopped coriander, ¼ cup chopped onion, ¼ cup chopped spring onion and 2 tsp ground ginger. Mix together well. Set aside for 30 minutes.

  • STEP 5.5 to make the glaze, in a bowl add 2 tbsp spring onion, 1 ½ tbsp flour, 2 tsp sichuan peppercorn powder, 2 tsp white peppercorn powder.

  • STEP 6.6 in a small saucepan ⅓ cup oil and heat it as hot as possible without burning it.

step 7

  • STEP 7.7 add the hot oil to the bowl with the spice powders and flour. Mix well. Set aside.

step 8

  • STEP 8.8 keep a bowl of sesame seeds ready for coating.

  • STEP 9.9 after resting the dough for 30 minutes it will be a little sticky.

  • STEP 10.10 dust a flat surface with flour, and roll the dough into a long even log. Cut it into 12 equal portions. Each one should be about 35 gms.

  • STEP 11.11 brush each portion of dough with prepared glaze.

  • STEP 12.12 take a portion of dough and roll it a little to form a small log. Then flatten it with the palm of the hand. Using a rolling pin, roll it out to form a long thin sheet about 25 cm long and 13 cm wide.

  • STEP 13.13 brush one side of the sheet with glaze.

  • STEP 14.14 spoon some filling onto the centre, pat it down and spread it out a little. Do not spread it all the way to the end of the sheet.

step 15

  • STEP 15.15 fold in the sides of the sheet over the filling. Fold in the top flap over the filling. Then gradually begin to roll it till the end of the sheet. Tuck in the sides.

step 16

  • STEP 16.16 stand the roll on its side. Press down gently with the palm of the hand in one motion to make a thin disc of half inch thickness and 10 cms width.

step 17

  • STEP 17.17 dip it in a bowl of sesame seeds. Coat only one side. Set it in a tray.

step 18

  • STEP 18.18 put enough vegetable oil to coat the bottom of a pan. Arrange the shao bing with the sesame side facing up and fry them on low heat for 5 minutes. Flip them over and fry the other side for 3 minutes or till both sides turn golden brown.

step 19

  • STEP 19.19 take them off the heat and place them on kitchen paper towels to drain off the excess oil.
