Directions: Chinese Chicken Wonton Recipe

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.In a large mixing bowl add 10 oz minced chicken breast.
  • STEP 2.Heat the wok and add 1 to 2 tsp oil and 3 oz minced mushroom, 2 oz minced shrimp 1 tsp minced garlic. Saute on medium heat till the aroma of the ingredients is released. Remove from the wok and transfer to the mixing bowl with the chicken mince.
  • STEP 3. Add 2 oz chopped water chestnut to the bowl.
  • STEP 4. Next add 1 tbsp chinese cooking wine, 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp minced garlic, 1 tbsp cornstarch, 1 large egg white to help keep the mixture moist and soft, 1 tsp sesame oil, ½ tsp chicken powder (optional) and some salt to taste. Mix to combine all the ingredients well. The filling should be a little more salty than usual.
  • STEP 5. To make the wontons using store bought wrappers, place 1 ½ tsp filling in the centre of the wrapper and bring the edges together and pinch them closed.
  • STEP 6. Fill a pot with water and bring it to a brisk boil. Add the wontons to the boiling water. This will bring the temperature down a little. Wait till the water starts to boil again, then add ½ cup of cold water to drop the temperature again. Adding cold water ensures that the filling cooks through and the skin will be perfect.
  • STEP 7. When the water comes back to the boil, the wontons should be floating to the top. This indicates that they are done.
  • STEP 8. Take the wontons out using a slotted spoon, and place them in a bowl with 1 ½ cups of chicken broth.
  • STEP 9.Add 2 tsp fried garlic, 2 tsp hot chili oil. Lastly add fresh lettuce and chopped cilantro (coriander) for garnish.
