Iron rich leafy green stir fry. Chena Thoran is a traditional dish from Kerala Cuisine, very popular in Kerala. The Yam stir fry with coconut is very tasty and goes well with rice and sambar. Chena Thoran is a favorite dish in Kerala with a little crispiness. If you stir fry the Chena Upperi in low flame for sometime, then you can enjoy the crispiness. Chena Upperi is an easy to prepare dish with limited ingredients. Yam is nutritious, rich in vital nutrients required for body. Yam is very popular in Kerala and almost every house has yam cultivation in their backyard.

Ingredients for Chena Thoran Recipe

  • 1 cup Grated elephant yam
  • 3 tablespoon Crushed red chilly
  • 4 Chopped onion small size
  • 4 No.s Chopped garlic
  • 2 tablespoon Oil
  • 3 No.s Green chilly
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 2 sprig Curry leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 cup Grated coconut

Directions: Chena Thoran Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.Heat a pan on the stove and add in 2 tbsp cooking oil and ½ tsp mustard seeds.

  • STEP 1.When mustard splutters add a few curry leaves, chopped garlic and onion. Saute well.

step 3

  • STEP 1.Add 3 tbsp crushed chilly and saute till the onions are tender.

step 4

  • STEP 1.Then add ½ tsp turmeric powder and 1 tsp of chilly powder.

  • STEP 1.Add a pinch of salt and 3 green chilly split in half. Mix well all the ingredients together.

step 6

  • STEP 1.Finally add ½ cup of grated coconut and 1 cup of grated elephant yam to the pan. Stir and well

step 7

  • STEP 1.Cook covered with a lid for 10 minutes on a low flame.

step 8

  • STEP 1.Turn off the flame and garnish with a few curry leaves. Drizzle over a tsp of coconut oil too. The dish is ready.
