  • 1/2 cup Black Eyed Beans
  • 1.50 cup Water
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • As required Salt To Taste
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1/2 Onion, Finely Chopped
  • 1 Tomatoes, Finely Chopped
  • 1 Green Chilies, Slit
  • 1/2 tablespoon Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1/4 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 0.13 teaspoon Cumin Powder
  • 0.13 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • 1/4 cup Grated Coconut
  • 1/2 tablespoon Tamarind Pulp
  • as required Fresh Coriander Leaves For Garnish

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Soak the black-eyed beans in water overnight or for at least 4-5 hours.
  • STEP 2.Drain the soaked beans and rinse them well.
  • STEP 3.In a pressure cooker, add the soaked beans, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the beans are tender.

Cooking Tips

  • You can also cook the beans in a regular pot, but it will take longer.
  • Adjust the spice level according to your preference by adding more or less red chili powder.
  • For a creamier texture, you can add a few tablespoons of coconut milk to the gravy.

Storage and Serving

  • Chawli Usal can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat the usal in a pan or microwave before serving.
