A delicious Bhutanese preparation of potatoes (kewa) cooked with cheese(datshi) and green chillies. It literally means potatoes and cheese and is a traditional thick gravy which is made up of potatoes, cheese and chillies. One of the most famous and second popular Bhutanese cuisines. All it takes is thin slices of potatoes, tomatoes in sufficient amount of water.

Ingredients for Bhutanese Kewa Datshi Recipe

  • 3 Potatoes sliced medium thick Nos
  • 8-10 Green chilies Nos
  • 2 tablespoon Garlic cloves sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Avocado Oil
  • As required Farmers cheese
  • 2 Sliced cheese Nos
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Water

Directions: Bhutanese Kewa Datshi Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.1 start by arranging the ingredients in layers in the stone pot.

  • STEP 2.2 first, layer 2 tbsp sliced garlic.

step 3

  • STEP 3.3 follow this with 3 medium thick sliced potatoes.

step 4

  • STEP 4.4 next add 8 to 10 slit green chillies depending on the level of pungency desired

step 5

  • STEP 5.5 add 1 tsp avocado oil, ½ tsp salt.

  • STEP 6.6 on top of the chillies spoon ½ cup farmers cheese and 2 cheese slices.

step 7

  • STEP 7.7 finally pour in 1 cup of water and put the stone pot on the heat on low heat.

step 8

  • STEP 8.8 cover and cook for 3 minutes, then increase the heat to medium and continue to cook.

step 9

  • STEP 9.9 after a few more minutes increase the heat further to medium high.

step 10

  • STEP 10.10 remove the lid and cook open for 7 to 8 minutes.

step 11

  • STEP 11.11 most of the water will have evaporated and the potatoes will be cooked. Turn off the flame. Stir gently and check the salt. Adjust if required.

  • STEP 12.12 kewa datshi is ready. Serve hot with rice.
