Bhutanese Ema Datshi Recipe

A traditional spicy and cheesy stew made from a variety of peppers and chillies, onions and tomatoes and stewed with grated cheese and butter. Ema datshi is the national dish of Bhutan, it is easy to make hearty soup with chilli peppers and cheese. The cheese is locally produced yak cheese.

Ingredients for Bhutanese Ema Datshi Recipe

  • 1.50 Tomato sliced lengthwise Nos
  • 1 Onion sliced lengthwise Nos
  • 1/2 Green capsicum sliced lengthwise Nos
  • 3-4 Red chili peppers sliced lengthwise Nos
  • 4-5 Green chili slit
  • 4-5 Garlic cloves sliced
  • 1 tablespoon Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Black peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • 1 cup Water
  • 3 tablespoon Butter
  • 1 cup Cheese grated

Directions: Bhutanese Ema Datshi Recipe

step 1

  • STEP 1.1 in a pan add 1 ½ tomato sliced lengthwise, 1onion sliced lengthwise, ½ green capsicum sliced lengthwise, 3 to 4 red chilli peppers (or more as per taste) slice lengthwise, 4 to 5 slit green chilli, 4 to 5 cloves garlic sliced, 1 tbsp salt, 1 tbsp black peppercorns (optional). Drizzle 1 tsp oil and add1 cup water- 1 cup.

  • STEP 1.2 put the pan on high heat. Cover and boil for 10 minutes. Remove the lid and stir.

step 4

  • STEP 2.4 then add 3 tbsp butter and 1 cup grated cheese. Mix all the ingredients well till cheese melts and gravy thickens.

step 5

  • STEP 3.5 ema datshi is ready. Serve hot with rice.
