Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Wash and soak the split yellow lentils for 30 minutes.
  • STEP 2.In a pressure cooker, heat oil and add cumin seeds, bay leaf, and dried red chili.
  • STEP 3.Add chopped bitter gourd and sauté for a few minutes.
  • STEP 4.Add the soaked lentils, turmeric powder, salt, and water. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
  • STEP 5.Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and give the dal a good stir.
  • STEP 6.For the tempering, heat ghee in a small pan and add cumin seeds, dried red chili, and asafoetida.
  • STEP 7.Pour the tempering over the cooked dal and mix well.
  • STEP 8.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.

Cooking Tips

  • To reduce the bitterness of the gourd, you can soak it in salted water for 10-15 minutes before cooking.
  • Adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more water if desired.
