Batata Vada Recipe

This goes out to all the potato lovers. Batata translates into potato in English.Batata vada is a popular Indian vegetarian fast food in Maharashtra, India. The dish consists of a mashed potato patty coated with chick pea flour, which is then deep-fried and served hot with chutney. The vada is typically around two or three cm in diameter.

Ingredients for Batata Vada Recipe

  • 4 potatoes, boiled and mashed medium
  • 1 cup chopped fresh coriander leaves
  • 4-6 garlic cloves
  • 3 green chillies
  • 1/2 piece ginger inch
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon afoetida
  • 4-6 curry leaves
  • 3/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • NaN As required Salt
  • As required For batter
  • 2 cup gram flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida

Directions: Batata Vada Recipe

  • STEP 1.For the masala, put coriander leaves, garlic, green chillies, ginger and little water in a mixer jar and grind to a fine paste.

  • STEP 2.Heat a tablespoon oil in a non-stick pan, add mustard seeds and let them splutter.

  • STEP 3.Add asafoetida, curry leaves and masala paste and mix.

  • STEP 4.Add turmeric powder and cook for two minutes.

  • STEP 5.Add potatoes and salt and mix everything well. Sprinkle some water, add coriander leaves and mix well.

  • STEP 6.Cover and cook for two to three minutes.

  • STEP 7.Transfer the potato mixture onto a plate and set aside to cool for ten to fifteen minutes.

  • STEP 8.For the batter, put gram flour, salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, asafoetida in a bowl, add sufficient water and whisk well to make a semi thick batter without any lumps.

  • STEP 9.Add baking soda, mix well and set aside for ten minutes.

  • STEP 10.Heat sufficient oil in a kadai.

  • STEP 11.Divide the potato mixture into equal portions and roll into balls and press lightly.

  • STEP 12.Dip each ball in the batter, drain off excess batter and slide into the hot oil.

  • STEP 13.Deep-fry the vadas for four to five minutes on medium heat or till golden and crisp on the outside.

  • STEP 14.Drain on absorbent paper. arrange them on a serving platter and serve hot.
