  • 1/2 Tomatoes, Chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 0.13 teaspoon Garam Masala

Directions: Basic Toovar Dal Recipe

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Rinse the toovar dal under running water until the water runs clear.
  • STEP 2.In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 4-5 whistles or until the dal is soft and cooked.
  • STEP 3.In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and asafoetida. Let them splutter.
  • STEP 4.Add chopped onions, garlic, and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  • STEP 5.Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and mushy.
  • STEP 6.Add red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Mix well.
  • STEP 7.Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix everything together. Simmer for a few minutes.
  • STEP 8.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or bread.

  • Soaking the dal for 30 minutes before cooking can help reduce the cooking time.
  • You can adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more or less water.
