  • 1/4 cup Flattened Rice
  • 0.13 cup Split Yellow Moong Dal
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1/4 tablespoon Ghee
  • 1/4 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 0.13 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1/4 tablespoon Chopped Ginger
  • as needed A Few Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 Green Chilies, Chopped
  • 0.13 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • As required Salt To Taste

Cooking Directions

  • STEP 1.Wash and soak the lentils for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  • STEP 2.In a pressure cooker, heat ghee and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and black pepper.
  • STEP 3.Add chopped ginger, curry leaves, and green chilies. Saute for a minute.
  • STEP 4.Add the soaked lentils, flattened rice, and water. Season with salt and turmeric powder.
  • STEP 5.Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the lentils and flattened rice are cooked well.
  • STEP 6.Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and give the Pongal a good mix.
  • STEP 7.Serve hot with coconut chutney or sambar.

  • You can add vegetables like carrots, peas, or beans to make it more nutritious.
  • Adjust the quantity of water according to the consistency you prefer.
  • For a richer flavor, you can add cashews and ghee while tempering.
