Be it pakoras during monsoon or the light besan ka chilla for a summer dinner, besan is our go-to ingredient for all the seasons. But are you aware of its nutritional value? 50 grams of besan has around 29 grams of carbs, 12 grams of protein, 3 grams fat, and 194 calories. Filled with all the essential nutrients that make up a whole, balanced meal, besan deserves more than just being stacked in the corner cabinets and remembered only during monsoons. Here are some of the incredible breakfast ideas that you can make with besan.

  1. Besan chilla
Besan chilla is one of the most filling and nutritious breakfast options. Easy to make, they can keep you full for a very long time. You can have them either with your favourite pickle or buttermilk and you are good to go for the day.
  2. Steamed dhokla
Dhoklas are every Gujarati’s favourite snack option. However, they are oil-free and are extremely light to begin our day with. And who doesn’t want hot, spongy dhoklas with curry leaves and chilli tempering the first thing in the morning? These soft, spongy delights can be served with a cup of coffee or tea for breakfast.
  3. Besan idli
Similar to dhokla, besan idlis are made with a variety of veggies and are tempting. Combine besan with semolina and your favourite veggies and steam them in a steamer to get soft idlis. You can also add fruit salt to make it fluffier.
  4. Methi thepla
Flatbreads made with whole wheat flour, besan, and fenugreek leaves, methi theplas can be munched any time of the day. Serve them with plain curd or any pickle and you are up for a flavour feast.

  5. Besan toast
This is a perfect breakfast option for days when you snooze your alarm and wake up just 30 minutes before your cab arrives. Easy, healthy, and filling, besan toast requires minimal ingredients like bread, besan, and some spices. Start making it while booking your cab and it will be ready before the cab arrives.

Besan is available in every Indian household but is very limited in use. Being gluten-free, besan is perfect for a vegan breakfast. Just whip up some besan with water and add the required ingredients and a healthy, sumptuous breakfast is ready.
