As the winter season kicks in all over the world, New Yorkers can’t seem to get enough of desi flavours and desserts – so much so that they’re finding some innovative ways to include them in their cup of coffee! For the uninitiated, Kolkata Chai Co, a café located in the East Village, has launched a delicious Gulab Jamun Latte – with hot and cold variations. Founded by siblings Ayan and Ani Sanyal, the launch of the new menu item sparked polarising reactions on social media, with most people intrigued and curious to know more.
Made using a flavoured syrup that is reminiscent of the khoa-loaded dessert, the liquid made with cardamom, saffron and rose petals is an instant way to elevate a hot or iced latte to gulab jamun supremacy. Sharing the announcement with a fancy photoshoot, the café’s official account stated, “POV: Get Rich or Chai Tryin’ with our new gulab jamun latte is a mindset, attitude, lifestyle, EVERYTHING.” Whether or not the taste matches the expectations, remains to be seen.
However, the café which is frequented by celebrities like Chris Rock and Hasan Minhaj seems to have grabbed eyeballs for this viral creation. Besides this fusion variant on the classic coffee, Kolkata Chai Co is popular for its quintessential Calcutta street food offerings like the breakfast paratha made with eggs and tomato jam, the bheti Kabiraji cutlet, onion samosas and even an oat milk chai soft serve for vegans. Taking their love for chai one step further, the café also produces its own line of chai truffles, chai muffins and a delicious chai loaf cake to enjoy with a hot cuppa.
