There isn’t a lot that you have to do to create a lip-smacking cocktail that is sure to wake up those taste buds. A simple cocktail often ends up on the most desired cocktails in bars. It is true that the best things have the least talk around them, initially, until they finally get discovered by someone who recognises their awesomeness and introduces it to more people.

The firecracker is not a very popular drink. But it’s not as though nobody knows about it. Like most inventions in the beverage world, it’s one of those drinks that may have been concocted when someone, or some people, were casually playing bartender at home. And while they had a load of cherry boxes, they didn’t know what to do with them. So they whipped up this delicious drink to surprise their friends and family.

If you want to start the party with a bang, look beyond sangria and no further than this amazing cocktail which is made using gin, rosé wine and muddled cherries. You may also substitute rose wine with any other sparkling wine.

We’re calling this the firecracker, simply because the simplicity of this cocktail will make a big, bold statement if you decided to serve it at gatherings. If you’re looking to make the firecracker cocktail with something other than rosé/sparkling wine and gin, then try using red wine and vodka. It might suit your taste if you want to jump into the deep end. For those who are just exploring the joys of wine, we highly recommend the first option. Here’s a recipe to make your very own firecracker.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 bottle chilled rosé wine (or sparkling wine)
  • 1 cup pitted cherries
  • 60 ml gin
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup ice
  • Lemon slices, to garnish

METHOD

  • Bring a pot of water to boil.
  • Add sugar, and stir continuously.
  • When the sugar dissolves, remove it from heat.

  • In a pitcher, combine sugar syrup, gin, rosé wine and muddled cherries. Stir well.
