The edible fungi that is commonly used in various cuisines has a fleshy body and chunky taste. The vast variety of mushrooms available across the globe is mind-boggling. Being one of the few edible fungi with a delicious taste, mushrooms come with great health benefits. Rich in fibre and proteins, shiitake mushrooms are considered to be one of the healthiest mushrooms to be consumed. Grown mostly on Asian land, mushrooms have lots of antioxidants and great nutritional value. The simple umbrella-shaped mushroom has served several purposes for different people in the past. 

Some used it for curing ailments while some others used it as a way of fulfilling spiritual and other divine activities. In India and other Asian countries, mushrooms were consumed for years as a source of adding umami flavour to their meals. In fact, in India alone, you’d find a plethora of mushrooms like gucchi. Gucchi is a type of mushroom that grows in high-altitude areas like Jammu and Kashmir. These mushrooms are said to have aphrodisiac qualities which are priced at high prices. These guchhi mushrooms are also used to make a Kashmiri specialty called guchhi pulao. 

The mushroom masala that comes from Indian cuisine is usually made from shiitake mushrooms, which are easily available in India. Similarly, porcini mushrooms are best suited for Italian cuisine. These type of mushrooms work well for sauces as well as meat dishes apart from pastas. Did you know the mushrooms are considered to be the meat of vegetarians, owing to its fleshy texture and taste? From Chinese to Japanese, Korean and European, mushrooms are extensively used in cooking.

This recipe is quite versatile as it can go well with breads or mixed with rice to make a wholesome meal. Creamy Garlic Mushrooms 


  • Olive oil - 1 tbsp
  • Butter - 1 tbsp
  • Onion - 1 large (minced)
  • Garlic - 1 tbsp (minced)
  • Mushrooms - 400 gms
  • Pasta/herb seasonings - 1 tsp
  • Chilli flakes - 1 tsp
  • Pepper - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt as per taste
  • Spinach - 1 cup (chopped)
  • Fresh cream - 1/2 cup
  • Cheese - 2 tbsp (grated)


  1. Begin by adding olive oil to a pan. 
  2. Toss some grated garlic and finely chopped onions in olive oil. 
  3. To this, add some butter, pasta seasonings, chilli flakes, salt and pepper. Mix well. 
  4. Throw in the washed mushrooms and add some chopped spinach. 
  5. Sauté all of this together and pour in some fresh cream. 
  6. Combine it well and top with grated cheese. 
  7. Serve hot with rice, bread or mashed potatoes. You can also use it as a pasta sauce.
