A hot Chocolate serves as a great pick-me-up in any season but sitting at home these days, hot chocolate is more like a necessity. Here’s a wonderful recipe for spiked Hot Chocolate to make your day (or your night) a little better.

Say no to the pre-made mixes and cafe hot chocolates, make your own, because we promise you, it’ll be infinite times better. This recipe is a double chocolate recipe and calls for both cocoa powder and melted chocolate. To cut through all that sweetness we have a hint of espresso and a dash of liquor. If you plan to make good hot chocolate, it helps to start with quality chocolate or a kind you like to eat as is.

You’ll Need

1 1/2 cups of whole milk

1/2 cup of heavy cream

1 tablespoon of powdered sugar

1/2 teaspoon espresso powder

1 cup of  dark chocolate

1 shot of rum

1 tablespoon of cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1/2 teaspoon of vanilla essence

whipped cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Chop the chocolate into small squares
  2. Over a double boiler, melt the chocolate. The double broiler is a more gentle way to melt the chocolate.
  3. In a saucepan, add the milk and cream. Follow up mixing in the cocoa powder, sugar, espresso powder, salt, and vanilla essence.
  4. Whisk constantly to ensure it doesn’t clump.
  5. Add the melted chocolate and continue stirring.
  6. Heat till the desired temperature and pour in your rum.
  7. Pour into a tall glass and swirl on some whipped cream and garnish with shaved chocolate.

Pro Tip: To make whipped cream at home, whisk a half cup of cream till soft peaks, add a teaspoon of vanilla and a tablespoon of sugar. Continuing whisking till stiff peaks.
