Rajma Masala To Rajma Pulao: 7 Delicious Kidney Bean Dishes

Kidney beans possess an earthy, nutty flavour with a creamy taste. When cooked, they turn soft and taste sweet and creamy to the bite. Adding these beans to curries makes them absorb the flavours of spices, herbs and other ingredients in the dish.

Kidney beans are a popular addition to the varied delicacies of many cuisines in the world. While they are added to vegetable pulao and curries in India, kidney bean hummus is popular in the Middle East countries. They also feature in the Mexican burritos and tacos. The fibre and protein content of this legume make them much more appealing as well.

Here are some dishes to prepare with these healthy kidney beans:

1. Rajma Masala:

The traditional Rajma Masala is a North Indian staple as it is fairly easy to make. This dish is made by soaking the beans for hours and then cooking the kidney beans, usually in a pressure cooker. Later, the beans are cooked endlessly in a tomato-based gravy that includes spices like cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, bay leaves and nutmeg. They are usually garnished with chopped cilantro and served with naan, roti and other flatbreads. But the popular combination is that of rajma and chawal, which is rajma masala with steamed rice and a side of pickled onions.

2. Roasted Kidney Bean:

Roasted kidney beans offer a delightful crunch with a nutty, earthy flavour. To prepare, wash the kidney beans, drain the liquids and pat them dry. Later, toss the dried kidney beans with olive oil and seasonings, then roast until crispy. The texture is satisfyingly crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Pair these roasted kidney beans with salads for added protein, use them as a crunchy topping for soups, or enjoy them as a standalone snack with a hot drink.

3. Kidney Bean Hummus:

Kidney Bean Hummus is a distinctive take on the traditional chickpea version. Kidney beans that have been blended have a creamier texture and an earthy, slightly nutty flavour. In a food processor, pulse kidney beans, garlic, tahini, olive oil, and lemon juice to prepare. For a nutritious snack, try this hummus with pita bread, vegetable sticks, or crackers. Kidney beans give it a unique richness and protein, making them a tasty substitute. Add some extra spice, such as paprika or cumin, to make this delicious and healthy dip even more delicious.

4. Kidney Bean Salad:

The combination of flavours and textures in kidney bean salad is delicious. Onions and bell peppers, two sharp vegetables, go well with the creamy, hearty texture of the kidney beans. Herbs, olive oil, and a zesty dressing are used to season it, resulting in a pleasing harmony of tangy and savoury flavours. This crisp salad is a great side dish for a barbecue or goes great with grilled meats. As an alternative, serve it with quinoa or over a bed of greens for a hearty vegetarian supper. It is a wholesome and fulfilling complement to any dish because of its adaptability and colourful combination.

 5. Kidney Bean Tacos:

Tacos Rajma provide a delicious combination of flavours and textures. Simmered in a spiced tomato-based stew, kidney beans (rajma) have a substantial, slightly creamy texture. To prepare, stuff soft taco shells with this aromatic rajma mixture and top with fresh ingredients such as chopped tomatoes, onions, shredded lettuce, cheese, and a dollop of salsa or yoghurt. This dish tastes great with a side of guacamole or Mexican rice. The taco is savoury and delicious, striking a balance between the freshness of the toppings and the firmness of the spiced kidney beans.

6. Rajma Pulao:

A delicious Indian meal called Rajma Pulao is made with fragrant basmati rice and kidney beans. To prepare this dish, first soak the rajma overnight and cook them until tender. In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee and sauté onions, garlic, and ginger until golden brown. Then, add spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric, and garam masala, followed by soaked rice and cooked rajma. Pour water and salt, bring to a boil, then cover and simmer until the rice is cooked and fluffy. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot.  To balance the strong flavours of this pulao, serve it with a side salad, tart pickles, or a refreshing yoghurt raita.

7. Rajma Tikki:

A delicious Indian delicacy, Rajma Tikki has a crispy exterior and a soft, savoury interior. These patties have a substantial texture and are made from mashed kidney beans seasoned with flavorful herbs like cumin, coriander, and chilli powder. Usually, they are shallow-fried until they turn golden brown. For a taste explosion, acidic tamarind or mint chutney go very well with Rajma Tikki. They can also be placed into buns to make tasty vegetable burgers or served with yoghurt-based dips, which makes them a tasty and adaptable snack or appetiser choice.
