Yam is a plant species of the genus Dioscorea (family Dioscoreaceae) and is mostly cultivated in tropical regions. They also happen to be a staple food crop in several regions of Africa, South America and Asia.
They are nutritious vegetables and consist of a large amount of starch. They are often boiled and then mashed into a sticky paste or dough, but they may also be fried, roasted, or baked in the manner of potatoes or sweet potatoes.
Yam is the main ingredient of a delicious side dish that is prepared during the Thanksgiving holiday in America. Some yam recipes that no one can resist include baked candied yams, yam cake, baked yams, Jamaican yellow yam stew, Ube panna cotta and others.
