Fun Fact: A person who makes pizza is known as a pizzaiolo.
Pizza is the most common, loved and preferred continental dish. It is an Italian, wheat-based baked dish topped with vegetables, meat or cheeses. The base of the pizza must remain, crisp, light and chewy. Often cheese is incorporated into the base and then it is finished with the sauce on top of it.
The classic pizza recipe is the Margherita which was cooked for the first time in the 1800s representing the Italian flag’s three main colours: red from the tomato sauce, white from the mozzarella, and green from the basil. In order to get the crispy base, a Margherita pizza must be cooked at very high temperatures. The toppings comprise traditional mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, and basil. The sauce is made from crushed tomatoes and seasoned with garlic, salt and herbs.
The pizza dough must always be yeasted in order to raise the dough. Mushrooms, bell peppers, baby arugula, feta, parmesan, sliced black olives and mozzarella are common ingredients while making sauce and toppings. If you prefer healthy recipes, using a multi-grain base will be beneficial, along with whole wheat flour, oats, maize flour and nutrient-dense seeds.
