Toast and butter is a standard breakfast dish across most households. It is easy, fuss-free and more or less serves the purpose too. You need something to tuck into before you leave your house, and there cannot be anything easier you can make in such little time, or can you? By definition, toast is a slice of bread that is heated on both sides so that it is nicely crisp and brown. However, there are many ways in which you can spruce up your simple toast. A couple of years ago, the avocado toast became all the rage and in the past couple of months we have had several ‘toast’ trends that have dominated the internet. Like the grated egg toast, where a boiled egg is grated on top of a crisp toast and later seasoned with herbs. Or the Yogurt toast, where a simple toast is slathered over with Greek Yogurt or hung curd, chocolate chips, maple syrup, berries etc.

This brings us to why we adore toasts so much. The room for experiments is immense. From fruits, to yogurt to eggs to berries what can you not add to your humble toast, and the results are almost always delicious. And even if your pantry is not filled with exotic ingredients you can still whip up magic with something as basic as besan.

This spicy besan toast is ideal for a quick breakfast. It is so yummy, that you would not mind making it again for tea-time later in the day.

To make this, you need to start with sifting a cup of besan to remove lumps. Then add in some salt, turmeric and cumin seeds. Some hing is also not a bad idea. Make a smooth batter by adding water. Then add chopped green chillies, coriander leaves and garlic cloves and mix it in the batter. Mix everything until, the batter is thick, yet smooth and lump-free.

Heat the tawa, dip the bread slices in the batter and toast the bread on both the sides until brown and crisp and you are done.
