‘Omakase’ To ‘Oat Milk’, Merriam-Webster Adds 9 New Food Words

2022 have been much eventful be it in terms of sports, fashion, travel or food and yes, we say food from dining out to ‘zero waste' took the food experience to another level as the FnB world opened to new experiences much seriously. From the viral TikTok food trends that not only showed many creative dishes but also some quick, easy hacks and fun ways to enjoy the kitchen space to many that were highly trolled, what was most exciting was 9 new words from Pumpkin spice to Omakase to Oat Milk making their way to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. And now are official words for your scrabble.

Merriam-Webster states, "Some of these new terms, like shrinkflation and metaverse, have recently been in the news; others, like yeet and janky, are more light-hearted." The editors of Merriam-Webster make sure that they keeo a close check on the words on all social media trends and those making big news and according to them these words are “mirrors to our cultural fascinations.” Words like pumpkin spice or oat milk or sessionable that might not seem like real words until few months back today have found a space in the dictionary. 

The editors further added saying while some words like "sessionable" and more were extensively used in the year, "Omakase" is the only international addition in the bunch of words. 

Here's the list of 9 new words that made their way to Merriam-Webster

Pumpkin Spice (Noun)

The definition: “A mixture of usually cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and often allspice that is commonly used in pumpkin pie.”

Birria (Noun)

The definition: “A Mexican dish of stewed meat seasoned especially with chili peppers.”

Omakase (Noun)


The definition: “A series of small servings or courses (as of sushi) offered at a fixed price and whose selection is left to the chef’s discretion.”

Plant-Based (Adjective)

The description: “1. Made or derived from plants; 2. consisting primarily or entirely of food (such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, oils, and beans) derived from plants.”

Ras El Hanout (Noun)

The definition: “A mixture of ground spices that is used in northern African cooking and includes coriander, ginger, turmeric, peppercorns, cumin, cinnamon, cardamom, cayenne pepper, and other spices.”

Sessionable (Adjective)

The description: “Having a light body and a lower-than-average percentage of alcohol.”

Banh Mi (Noun)

The definition: “A usually spicy sandwich in Vietnamese cuisine consisting of a split baguette filled typically with meat (such as pork or chicken) and pickled vegetables (such as carrot and daikon) and garnished with cilantro and often cucumbers.”

Mojo (Noun)

The definition: “A sauce, marinade, or seasoning that is usually composed primarily of olive oil, garlic, citrus juice, and spices (such as black pepper and cumin).”

Oat Milk (Noun)

The definition: “A liquid made from ground oats and water that is usually fortified (as with calcium and vitamins) and used as a milk substitute.”
