On such an auspicious day, it is best to avoid grains altogether, but those who do consume them can choose light and easily digestible options like Sama rice and Buckwheat (kuttu).

Foods To Avoid On Mauni Amavasya

What you do not eat is as important as what you do. As per the health guru, here are the key foods to avoid to honour the spirit of this sacred day:

Processed Foods

Since they are laden with preservatives, processed foods are contrary to the cleansing essence of fasting. They clog your body and disturb its natural rhythm. Choose simplicity over artificial complexity.”

Onions and Garlic

These are rajasic in nature, which means they stimulate the senses and mind—undesirable during a day meant for inner peace. If aiming for inner silence, consume foods that quiet the system. Onions and garlic provoke turbulence and must be avoided as much as possible.

Spicy And Oily Foods

Fried and spicy foods generate heat and inflammation, negating the cooling and balancing effects of fasting. Though they appear attractive, they load up the stomach and derail the cleansing process. Just remember, simplicity is the key.

Grains And Legumes

Grains are unnecessary on fasting days as they are tough to digest and pull away from the lightness of a satvik fast. Instead, focus on foods that are easy to digest and align with satvik energy.”

Non-Vegetarian Foods

These are tamsic (inducing lethargy and dullness) and go against the satvik principles of fasting. Since non-vegetarian foods weigh down the body and mind, replace them with foods that lift your energy and spirit.
