Is Your Honey Pure? Let’s Find Out

Winters just don’t bring chilly weather, long evenings, more family time, and indulgence in some hot beverages but also bring seasonal infections along. We simply have to deal with it all. But there are so many magical kitchen ingredients that can help you get rid of all such ailments. The one magical ingredient we are talking about is honey. Packed with antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, honey can be a boon for health. But the honey has to be pure not adulterated.

Honey is something that has so many benefits but all it needs is a check on its quality. It is no less than a challenge to find pure honey as it could be easily adulterated. Often, honey is mixed with glucose solution, high fructose corn syrup, and other ingredients that we don't even know. Of course, honey comes from bees and not factories. There are other factors as well that can help you in determining if the honey you are using is pure or not.

Thumb Test

To check if your honey is pure or adulterated, put a drop of honey on your thumbnail and see if it spells. If it remains intact and doesn’t drip away, it is pure but if it overflows and spills, it could be adulterated. Pure honey has the quality of sticking to the surface.

Flame Test

Another way to prove if the honey is pure or not, is to do the flame test. Dip a piece of cotton in the honey and set it on fire. Make you do it with utmost caution. If it doesn’t burn, then it contains water and if it burns, your honey is pure.

Water Test

This is the most common way to check if your honey is pure or not. All you have to do is take a spoonful full of honey and add it to a glass of warm water. If the honey gets dissolved in water easily, it is not pure. This is because pure honey is denser and will settle at the bottom. It doesn’t dissolve easily.

Heat Test

Many of you won’t know that pure honey caramelizes after being heated whereas adulterated honey forms bubbles. Pure honey may form a layer of “foam” at the top when cooked due to the air trapped in the honey.

Bread Test

This is the most fun and amazing honey-testing method. You can do this by taking a slice of bread and spreading a layer of honey on it. If the honey is pure, it will harden quickly and within a few minutes, the bread will turn crunchy.  And if the honey is adulterated, the bread will become soggy.

These were some easy ways to check the quality of honey you have been using every day. Let us know what worked for you!
