How to Differentiate Between Real And Fake Ginger

Demand and supply of ginger have increased over the past 1 year, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Being rich in strong antioxidants and having anti-inflammatory properties make ginger one of the best food items to have during this time. Like many, you also may be adding this magical ingredient to your Kadha to boost your immunity and keep infections at bay. But, are you sure if you are buying real ginger? Indian market is flooded with fake ginger which looks similar to the real ones. And, there are clear signs to differentiate between the two. Knowing it will not only save your money but also enhance the taste of your Kadha and offer health benefits. Let’s know how to know if you are picking up the right ginger produce.

Sniff

The most basic way to understand to find out the real ginger is by sniffing it. If it smells sharp and pungent, you have the right ginger. On the other hand, those with no smell are fake.

Check Ginger Peel

If you are easily able to peel off the ginger with your nails and get a pungent smell, you have the real ginger in front of you. Those with hard skin are not recommended to buy.

Appearance Matters

If you find ginger too attractive, extremely clean, and shiny, then simply run away from it. Many times, ginger is washed with acid to clean them. Consuming such ginger will do more harm than good. On the other hand, if you see ginger that has quite a bit of dirt stuck on it or it is not shiny then it is promisingly fresh. Go for it.

Note: If you wish to buy fresh ginger, you should break it into two parts and check if threads are coming out. If yes, you have the fresh ginger. It should be dry and not damp.
