We all have the same reaction whenever someone mentions Disney World in the room. It’s mostly a high-pitched, happy scream. Then frustration takes over us, as we realise that the pandemic has really rained all over our parade, huh? It is impossible to see the fun-filled theme parks that are not in our vicinity as long as travel is banned; although we heard that Disney World is slowly but surely opening its doors to people who live nearby.  Hmph.

Let’s think about the good stuff. On my last visit, nearly everything went according to plan. I am usually wary of theme parks because stress runs high, as we wait for our turns in queues, get dizzy wondering whether we’ll ever make it back to earth and all in all, our families just add more drama by constantly telling us to look after our belongings. But isn’t the best part that we can totally act like little kids in theme parks and that...that's alright?

But also, my other favourite parts are that the rides are fun, the park snacks are great, the parks are way too beautiful and the shows are magical!

Disney World ensures that the theme park visit remains the best experience of our childhood and teenage life. Here’s more good news for foodies! Disney World is famous for its tonga toast since 1971. It is served at Kona Cafe and Captain Cook's at Polynesian Village Resort. Tonga toast is made with a brick of sourdough bread that is stuffed with bananas, doused in a batter of sugar, eggs, cinnamon and milk, then deep-fried! Now, they also serve a dairy-free option to accommodate people with allergies.

So what is it, really? It’s the king of toasts!

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in Florida also offers some really delicious breakfast options such as grill items, sandwiches, burgers, breakfast burrito, Micky waffle and more!

But tonga toast has a dedicated cult following. I feel like I should have made this a really long time back. Oh well. But of course, I wanted to tell YOU as soon as I could. Here’s how to make it yourself so you can eat it right away!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 2 bananas
  • Oil, for frying
  • 1/2 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 2-3 sliced strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon Nutella
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 3-inch thick slices of sourdough bread

METHOD

- Slice the bananas lengthwise.

- Slit the sourdough bread in the centre, but not the corners.

- Stuff the insides of sourdough with bananas.

- Now combine cinnamon, sugar, milk and eggs.

- Dip the sourdough bread in the batter, and fry it in oil.

- Dust with powdered sugar.

- Serve with a side of strawberries and Nutella.

We hope that you’ll enjoy this recipe! Meanwhile, remember: Disney World awaits your arrival.
