Get Your Hands On This Lip-Smacking Chicken Pickle

Pickles are a vital part of any Indian meal and without them, the meal seems incomplete. A tiny portion of pickle doubles up the spice and flavours of the food and makes it more delicious. Not only do they add up to the flavour of the meal you are having, but it also gives you a feeling of satisfaction. Now, you may have tried different versions of pickles or achars. Be it mango pickle, lemon pickle, tomato pickle, tamarind pickle, or any other, these pickles are the shining stars. You can pair it with chapati, parantha, and rice. Among all the unique pickles that you have tried, did you get a chance to taste chicken pickle? You might have seen ‘chicken’ associated with curry, sandwich, burger, pizza, etc but chicken doesn't go with pickle. Right? But it does exist.  

India has a tradition of pickling every single vegetable but non-vegetarian pickles are lesser known. But an interesting fact is that non-vegetarian pickles are made in many parts of South India, especially at the houses where there is meat consumption. Now I think this is everything that a non-vegetarian would love to have!! Isn’t it? 

Try making this easy and delicious chicken pickle at your home by following these simple steps. 

Ingredients 

  • 1 kg chicken (cut into small pieces) 
  • 2 cups red chili powder 
  • 2 tsp turmeric powder 
  • ¾ cup salt 
  • ½ mustard oil 
  • 100 gm ginger (chopped) 
  • 1 to 2 cinnamon sticks 
  • ½ cup poppy seeds 
  • 20 cloves  
  • 2 tsp ginger garlic paste 

Method 

  • First, marinate the chicken pieces with turmeric powder and ginger garlic paste. Keep it aside for 10 minutes 
  • Take a pan and add 2 cups of water to it. Let it boil 
  • Now add the chicken pieces and cook till the water gets evaporated 
  • Meanwhile, take another pan and add oil 
  • Heat oil until it emanates smoke 
  • Add the ginger pieces and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes 
  • Add chicken pieces and fry golden brown  
  • Remove the chicken pieces and let them cool 
  • Add lemon juice, fenugreek seed powder, chili powder, and salt and mix well 
  • Store in a sterilized jar 
  • Pour the remaining oil on the chicken pieces  
  • Store in the cool place  

Some tips for preparing delicious chicken pickle 

  • Make sure that moisture gets completely out of the chicken 
  • Try using sea salt instead of iodized salt for the pickle as it improves the shelf life as well as the taste 
  • Make sure you store it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge for at least 6 to 8 hours. 
  • Ensure that the jar used to store pickles is washed thoroughly. Also, dry the jar in the sun.
  • Make sure the pickle does not come in contact with water to have a longer shelf life. 
  • Always used a clean and dry spoon to remove the pickle 
  • For increasing the shelf life of the pickle, heat oil separately and after it cools down, add it to the pickle so that it covers the top.
