Five Cocktails That Have Been Named After Famous People

While it may not be realistic for fans to have a tipple with their favourite celebrity, it’s certainly possible to sip on drinks inspired by them. Bartenders across the world have experimented with ingredients to create cocktails that pay homage to famous people, from Charlie Chaplin to Marilyn Monroe. Some sweet and others sour, five cocktails inspired by well-known names are: 

The Marilyn Monroe

No less than a legend, Marilyn Monroe went on to become a sex symbol in the 1950s and 1960s. Inspired by the late model and actress’ love for champagne, The Marilyn Monroe uses bubbly, apple brandy and grenadine. The cocktail is traditionally served in a champagne flute or coupe glass, garnished with two cherries on a stick.

Dirty Shirley 

An American diplomat, actress and singer, Shirley Temple has had a non-alcoholic drink named after her. Temple started her career at the age of three, and so the drink became one meant for kids. Legend has it that when Shirley Temple went out with her parents who drank cocktails, the bartender would make a special non-alcoholic drink for her. However, the alcoholic version of Shirley Temple uses vodka and is popularly known as Dirty Shirley. 

The Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin needs no introduction, even to the most ill-informed people. The cocktail named after the comic actor with a signature moustache can be traced back to the Waldorf-Astoria in New York in the early 20th century. Sloe gin, lime juice and apricot brandy give the cocktail a sweet, citrusy flavour.

The Mary Pickford

Fondly called America’s sweetheart, Mary Pickford a Canadian-American actress and producer. She was known for playing little-girl roles, and so the cocktail named after her is mostly sweet. The Mary Pickford uses white rum, grenadine, pineapple juice and Maraschino liqueur. It is served garnished with one or more Maraschino cherries.

The Ginger Rogers

Having won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the romantic drama Kitty Foyle, Ginger Rogers was a prominent American actress and singer. The cocktail named after her is made with gin, ginger ale, fresh lemon juice and mint leaves, and was invented during the Prohibition era.
