Ditch Eggs For Breakfast, Try Chhir Chot - The Kashmiri Pancake

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It decides how your day is going to start, and how it is going to be moving forward. It is the first meal you have after a long period of fast during the entire night. So, it is very important to have a nutritious and filling breakfast first thing in the morning. Indian cuisine has a lot of variety when it comes to breakfast. It is a common misconception that our breakfast options are only full of carbohydrates. From protein rich cheela to boiled eggs and banana, everyone has a different favorite breakfast option.

Chhir chot is a delicious pancake made with rice flour from the lands of Kashmir. This authentically Kashmiri dish is actually extremely simple to make and is an entire meal in itself. It is the perfect dish to start your day with on a healthy note. With strong flavours of ajwain, chhir chot Is usually served alongside a hot cup of tea and some tomato garlic chutney. Here is the recipe for this Kashmiri version of cheela.

  • 2 cups rice flour 
  • 1 teaspoon ajwain seeds
  • Salt as per taste
  • Water as required
  • Cooking oil for frying

Method

  • In a big mixing bowl, sieve the rice flour properly.
  • Then add the salt and the adjacency seeds and mix them into the rice flour. 
  • Add water to make the chhir chot batter. It should resemble the consistency of a dosa or a cheela batter. 
  • Next, place a nonstick tawa on the gas and grease it with little oil. 
  • Using a ladle, spread the batter on the tower in a round shape. Make sure that it is evenly spread. 
  • Drizzle a little bit more oil and cover the tawa with a transparent lid. 
  • Cook until you can see light brown pores on the upper side. It would mean that the bottom layer of the dish has turned light brown. 
  • Now, brush the upper side with some oil and flip it. Cook till the other side has also become light brown. 

Your chhir chot is now ready. Serve it alongside some spicy tomato garlic chutney as an amazing breakfast option.
