Bhungra Bateta: Gujarat's Ultimate Street Food. Tried It Yet?

When we talk of street food, the first thing that comes to your mind is golgappe but you know what? There is much more to look forward to. This piece is about yet another flavourful street food from Gujarat. I think you’ve guessed it. We are talking about the OG Bhungra Bateta. For those who don’t know, Bhungra Bateta is an absolutely delicious and flavourful potato dish from Gujarat which is known for its unique eating style. No, this spicy potato dish is not eaten with roti, kulcha, or paratha but with pipe fryms. Interesting, isn’t it?

Ingredients

  • 3 potatoes (medium-sized) 
  • 6 tbsp cooking oil 
  • 25 garlic cloves 
  • 1 tbsp peanuts 
  • 2 dry red chilies 
  • ½ tbsp hing 
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds 
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder 
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice 
  • 1 ½ tbsp red chili powder 
  • 2 tbsp chaat masala 
  • ½ tbsp black salt 
  • Handful of coriander (freshly chopped) 
  • Salt to taste 

Method 

  • Heat oil in a pan and add cumin. Fry the pipe fryms and take them out. 
  • Use the same oil and add chopped potatoes. Fry it for a while. 
  • Meanwhile, take a grinder and add peanuts, garlic cloves, and red chili in a mixer. Form a fine paste.  
  • When done, take out fried potatoes on a plate. 
  • Then, add hing and spice paste to the oil. Give it a good mix. 
  • Add salt, cumin powder, and coriander powder. Mix it well. 
  • Add little water and let it cook for 2 minutes. 
  • Add fried potatoes to the mixture and mix well. Cover the lid and let it cook. 
  • Add chaat masala, black salt, and lemon juice. Give it a good mix. 
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with pipe fryms.
