Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Ram, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage cities of India. Ever since the historic Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the Ram Lalla idol, Ayodhya has transformed from a quiet holy site into a global destination that now attracts devotees and tourists from all across the world.
Considering the religious beliefs of devotees, the Uttar Pradesh government has officially implemented a ban on the sale of non-vegetarian food and alcohol within a 15-kilometre radius of the Ram Temple. If you’re planning a trip to Ayodhya in the near future, here is all you need to know about the new regulations and how they can impact the culinary landscape of the holy city.
The Scope Of Non-Veg Food And Liquor Ban In Ayodhya
As per regulations, the area surrounding the Ram Janmabhoomi was set to be meat-free and alcohol-free for quite some time. However, following the reported complaints, the authorities have solidified the laws with this recent implementation to clarify the boundaries.

- 15-km radius: The non-veg and liquor ban is not limited to the vicinity of the temple. As per the recent regulations, it has been extended to a 15-km radius, which effectively covers the Panchkosi Parikrama circuit.
- No sales and deliveries: The hotels, restaurants, homestays, and local vendors that lie within the restricted area will not be allowed to sell or serve non-vegetarian dishes and alcoholic beverages to the pilgrims and tourists.
- Food deliveries: Food delivery giants like Zomato and Swiggy will also be aligned with the recent regulations and will be prohibited from delivering non-vegetarian options. If your delivery location falls in the restricted zone, you would not get non-veg options from the menus.

Reports state that Manik Chandra, the assistant food commissioner of Ayodhya, received complaints that, despite the previous ban, non-veg food was being served and delivered through online orders. He further stated that all the hotels, vendors, and delivery companies have been informed about the new regulations, and the authorities will closely monitor the situation to ensure compliance. As per reports, despite the motion adopted by Ayodhya Municipal Corporation (AMC), over two dozen liquor shops still exist in the 15-kilometre stretch. Bridging the gap and ensuring the sanctity of Ram Mandir, this new regulation aims to take strict measures.
