The modern Indian consumers are not just tracking their calories but also have their eyes on the best possible products. Making health the first priority, more and more people are re-evaluating their daily staples like milk, ghee, paneer, and more. Talking about the everyday essentials for kids and the most frequently used ingredients in teas and coffees, knowing more about milk is always required.

Traditionally, buffalo milk has dominated many Indian households, prized for its thick texture and high fat content. But in recent years, A2 cow’s milk has gained popularity, especially among health-conscious individuals and parents of young children. To dive deeper into knowing which is the best pour for you, here’s a Slurrp exclusive with expert insights by Dr Archana Batra, a dietitian and a certified diabetes educator.

Understanding A2 Cow Milk

A2 milk contains a protein known as A2 beta-casein, which closely resembles the protein structure found in human breast milk. Thus, it is a more natural and easily digestible option for most people. Rich in essential nutrients like vitamins A and D, Omega-3 fatty acids, and calcium, A2 milk supports bone health and overall wellness. Its high fat content can also help slow the absorption of carbohydrates, making it especially beneficial for individuals with diabetes by aiding in blood sugar management. Unlike regular milk, which contains both A1 and A2 proteins, A2 milk is free from the A1 protein that is often associated with digestive discomfort, bloating, and inflammation in sensitive individuals.

“Since A2 milk closely resembles the structure of human milk, it is best suited for people who often feel bloated or uncomfortable after drinking regular milk. It’s a great option for children and adults alike, especially those with mild lactose intolerance,” says Dr Archana.

What About Buffalo Milk?

Buffalo milk contains fat-soluble vitamins such as A & D and is high in proteins and calcium. It is thicker, creamier, and fattier than cow milk. It is rich in calories and used for making paneer, curd, and ghee. Since buffalo milk is denser, it gives you instant energy, and it's a good option for growing children and those with high physical activity. But, for people looking to manage weight, it's high in fat and excess caloric content.

As per Dr Batra, “Buffalo milk is a powerhouse for people needing high energy and muscle mass. It contains more calcium and protein than cow’s milk and can be very beneficial for growing children, athletes, and underweight individuals.”

The Right Pick For You

Drawing a conclusion, A2 milk is a better choice if you are looking for light and easily digestible milk. On the other hand, buffalo milk is ideal if you want to gain weight and build muscle, as it contains more calories.

"As a dietician, I recommend that you choose milk based on your body's needs and how you feel after consuming it. Both A2 cow’s milk and buffalo milk have their own health benefits. The key always lies in understanding your health priorities,” Dr Archana sums up.
